Travel – in, around and outside Thailand.
Chiang Mai is situated right at the centre of the many amazing travel destinations in and around the Greater Mekong sub-region and is a short hop by plane to all Thailand’s neighbouring countries, including China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Burma and even Hong Kong. You couldn’t live in a more convenient city if travel is your passion!

Close to home is the fascinating Golden Triangle, with its chequered history of drugs and violence - now, thankfully, regarded as mainly a safe destination for tourists. Its long history, its many ethnic peoples and its spectacular scenery make it a not-to be –missed destination, easily accessed from Chiang Mai by air, bus or guided tour.
The historical sites in Thailand itself deserve a special trip, with each representing periods in the development of Thailand into a unified nation as well as developments in the artistic, cultural and religious lives of their people. Perhaps the most famous, apart from the Lanna kingdom itself, is Ayuddhaya, located north-east of Bangkok. The kingdom came to prominence, both in government and, more importantly, in the arts and religion, during the late 16th to late 18th centuries. Although the extensive temple areas are ruined now, the site is stunningly beautiful and well worth a visit.

Chiang Saen, near Chiang Rai on the northern borders, was founded by a wave of Tai incomers as early as 545 a.d., and retained its strategic and cultural importance for hundreds of years. King Mengrai, who founded Chiang Mai as his ‘First City’, was born there early in the 14th century, and made Chiang Saen a base for his expansion and conquests further south which eventually resulted in the founding of the Lanna kingdom. There are a host of historical sites, including Wat Prathart Doi Jom Gitti, founded in the 7th century a.d. The Chiang Saen museum displays distinctive Buddhist art from this highly regarded period.
The city and province of Mae Hong Son, located on the Thai/Burmese border, is famous for its laid-back charms and magnificent scenery. Although its local airport is only a short flight from Chiang Mai, perhaps the best way to travel to this popular destination is by road, which winds through the stunning mountain ranges which guard the border regions. Once there, you will find many outlying villages which welcome visitors, as well as seemingly never-ending views of a province which is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the whole of Thailand.

Of course, travel to farther-flung destinations is straightforward in Chiang Mai, due to its international airport. The routes of budget airlines as well as by Thai Air don’t just end up in Bangkok for connection with a host of international departures – many will take you straight to your chosen destination. Phuket, Singapore, Vientiane, Hong Kong, Taipei, Kunming and Kuala Lumpur, plus a good few other destinations, are all served by direct flights from Chiang Mai Another plus-point of a number of these direct destinations is that, when booking to fly long-distance, you may have a better choice of fares and flight times to Western destinations than if you change flights in Bangkok. It has also been suggested, (occasionally…), that another plus-point of alternative routes means you are able to avoid Bangkok’s infamous new Suvarnabhumi International Airport, colloquially known as ‘Swampy’!
